Dress Shape Diary

A common question brides ask is what silhouette they should choose. This, of course, varies with each woman depending on her personal style and what parts of her body she’d like to highlight. If you’re starting your wedding dress shopping journey, we’re giving you a breakdown of what gowns are available so you can decide which you may want to try on once you begin shopping.

A-line

Alder

The classic bridal silhouette, the A-line has remained a popular choice among brides for decades for good reason. The timeless shape looks amazing on everyone, flaring out from the waist into a gentle A-shape that highlights your waist, slimming you, and makes your torso the star of the show. This shape is great for women who love their upper body, brides who want to appear taller, or women who just want that classic bridal look.

After 5 Tip: Love the A-line effect, but want more drama? Try a ball gown! The shape flatters all the same areas, but the skirt is more full for a bigger statement. This is also popular among brides who love that princess-like look.

Fit and Flare

Ash

A silhouette that’s been rapidly gaining popularity over the past few years, the fit and flare is fitted through the hip, flaring out into it’s classic trumpet-like skirt starting midway down the thigh. The flared skirt creates an exaggerated shape that emphasizes your figure, making this a great silhouette choice for brides who want to highlight their hips.

Wondering what the difference is between fit and flare and mermaid? A mermaid dress gives the same effect, but the skirt starts at the knee, creating a slightly more exaggerated shape.

Sheath

Calla

The sheath silhouette continues straight down from the hips, slightly less fitted than the fit and flare but stays much closer to the body than an A-line. If you’re torn between the two, this silhouette is perfect, giving you the best of both worlds.

Really want a train? Don’t worry—sheath dresses often have gorgeous trains to give them a little more drama, if that’s what you’re looking for.
